Do you like working with your hands as well as new technologies? Master new skills in the innovative field of diesel technology. Diesel technicians are essential to keeping everything up and running. You’ll maintain and repair diesel engines of trucks, semi-trailers and other heavy equipment and oversee all diagnostic tests on vehicles. You’ll also repair engines and transmissions, optimize steering and braking systems, and test-drive vehicles for safety. The average income for a Diesel Technician is $85,951.

How to Get Your CDL.

Becoming a Commercial Driver starts with obtaining your CDL license.

Here are the four steps to get your future rolling.

CDL training provider's tuitions vary between $3,500 - $4,500 with many offering scholarship opportunities for qualified applicants.

Prep For Your CDL Licence

Obtain a copy of your state’s CDL manual, and decide what kind of vehicle you’ll be driving and which of the three classes of CDL you will need.

Get Your Commercial Learners Permit (CLP)

This permit authorizes you to practice with a qualified CDL holder next to you.

Train for Your CDL

Complete entry-level driver training with a registered training provider.

This training provider will prepare you for your trucking future and assist in connecting you with trucking companies who are looking to hire.

Pass the CDL Skills Test

You must pass the three parts of the Skills Test: the Vehicle Inspection Test, the Basic Controls Test and the Road Test.

Dan has been driving for 45 years. He is an avid chess player and a kayak fisherman. He has competed in the ATA National Championship and the Alabama TDC for 17 years, with 7 top place finishes and two State Grand Champions. He lives in Theodore, Alabama.

Richard Pratt - FedEx Freight

Richard has been a mentor to young students for years and has a passion for safety. He has competed serval times in the Alabama TDC. Richard enjoys flying and has a pilot’s license. He lives in Gardendale, Alabama.

Loyd Howell - TCW, Inc.

Llyod has been working in trucking for over 27 years. He has a passion for mentoring and setting an example for everyone around him at TCW, Inc. Llyod has won numerous awards at the Alabama TDC and has competed in the ATA National Championships. Llyod was named Alabama’s Driver of the Year 2024, and he lives in Sterrett, Alabama.

Charlie Salter - L B 3, LLC

Charlie has been driving for 32 years with 2.9 million safe miles. He likes to hunt, fish and work on his 1973 Kenworth. Charlie has competed five times in the ATA National Championship and placed several times in the Alabama Trucking TDC. He lives in Prattville Alabama.
